Recently, tktech over at tkte.ch decided to discontinue running two services he's provided for free for over a decade each: Notifico and wiki.vg. As of writing, this will take place on Nov 30th, 2024.
The former isn't as interesting to me anymore, since the world has moved on to chat platforms that have first-class webhook support and a middle-man to dispatch notifications isn't as necessary anymore, but the sunsetting of wiki.vg is of interest to me, since most of ClassiCube's developer userbase uses the protocol documentation and the extended protocol documentation (CPE).
Sunsetting projects is a big decision with a lot of finality. At some point it becomes necessary to draw a line in the sand when you're no longer actively engaged with a project, or when you no longer see a need for it to exist. Now, more than ever, these niches can be easily filled by folks who have a strong desire to use or maintain these projects independently.
Luckily, there hasn't been a lot of negativity for the decision tktech has made here:
- Notifico is, and always has been, open source, relatively easy to deploy, and released under a permissive license (MIT).
- wiki.vg is free to access and an archive will be made available soon(tm) that can be imported into a properly-configured MediaWiki instance.
- There has been strong support on minecraftwiki for absorbing wiki.vg's content
So, overall, this should be a fairly painless process.
and no, I'm not deleting classicube.
